ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE

The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is located on a 54 acre campus in West Hartford, Connecticut.  It is a residential and day program operating as a state-aided private school.  It was established in 1817 as the first permanent school for the deaf in America.  The current service load is approximately 215.  The program is a comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through high school, and adult service program, utilizing a total communication philosophy.  The American School for the Deaf is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs Serving the Deaf, the Departments of Education in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF).

SCOPE OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Elementary School Principal or Instructional Supervisor, instructs elementary-aged deaf and hard of hearing students (regular and DSN) in all areas.

PRIMARY DUTIES

(a)    Teaches a variety of academic subjects, including functional and applied academics.

(b)    Prepares appropriate materials and lesson plans.

(c)    Writes report cards, progress reports and other documents, as needed.

(d)    Assists in developing I.E.P.s and participates in PPT meetings, child staffings and other meetings.

(e)    Evaluates student performance.

(f)      Participates in school curriculum planning, development and revision.

(g)    Implements behavior management programs as necessary.

(h)    Participates in staff development, may serve as organizational advisor.

(i)      Participates in departmental, school-wide committee work, curriculum work.

(j)      Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Master’s Degree in Education of the Deaf/Special Education and appropriate State of CT Teacher Certification.  SCPI Level of Intermediate Plus.  Good judgment.  Ability to work in a collaborative team setting.  Ability to work flexible hours when needed.   Bachelor’s Degree in Deaf Education or Special Education will be considered.
