For Interpreters and Deaf Interpreters – VRI Survey
The National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC) Interpreting via Video Work Team is focused on identifying common needs, issues and practice of the video remote interpreting (VRI)industry. VRI is a fee-based interpreting service where at least one person (the interpreter, the deaf person or the hearing person) is at a distance.
The Work Team’s initial analysis will provide input to interpreter education regarding essential educational and training needs of interpreters working in video settings. It is anticipated that the data collected will begin to clarify the strategies, ethical perspectives and training needs of VRI interpreters. The NCIEC will use these data in curriculum development and for improving VRI interpreting.
Your participation in this survey will help us further this work. All responses will be confidential and only available to the research team. No identifying information will be maintained with the actual data you report.
We will ask you to participate in an on-line survey (see the link provided below). The survey online will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Completion of the survey will occur between now and June 19, 2009. During the on-line survey, you will be asked to respond to a series of questions regarding VRI.
There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study. However, your answers will help us to learn more about the effective strategies and processes in VRI. What we learn from survey results will be foundational in developing curriculum and educational opportunities for VRI interpreters.
Please note that the decision to participate in this research project is up to you. You do not have to participate and you can refuse to answer any question. You may withdraw from the survey at any time with no negative effects.
If you have any questions about this study, please feel free to contact Beverly Hollrah at beverly.hollrah@gallaudet.edu; or Mary Lightfoot at mary.lightfoot@gallaudet.edu.
