Survey Targets Captioning Issues

The CSD Help Center, launched in February, takes phone calls, e-mails, and even has video-phone capabilities. As the nationwide DTV conversion nears, the outreach has been effective. “Thus far, we’ve been extremely satisfied with our efforts. We still have a long way to go,” says Communications Director Derric Miller.

The CSD has been able to help the deaf and hard of hearing community move forward with digital TV. And while thigns have run smoothly, one major problem still remains. “We’ve noticed that a lot of the consumers that were calling in were concerned about the quality of their captioning,” explains Christopher Soukup, who is the VP of CSD Ventures.

“There’s approximately 118 million people in the U.S. today who rely on captioning one way or another,” according to Miller. Because of that, many are noticing problems. “There’s a different captioning protocol for analog and for digital and that’s very very confusing for consumers,” says Soukup.

As a response to the captioning issues, the CSD has opened up a brand new survey to determine which issues affect consumers the most. “Now we’ve got a central resource that we can bring back to the community and say; ‘this is the type of TV that you use, this is the type of network that you use.’ Those are the ways you can resolve these issues,” describes Soukup.

So what are the big issues? A big concern is delayed or early captions or no captions at all. Additionally, words over-lapping each has been an issue.
